In a stunning display of cricketing prowess, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) secured their third Indian Premier League (IPL) title with a resounding eight-wicket win over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the IPL 2024 final at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Sunday. The victory, marked by a clinical bowling performance and a swift chase, has sparked celebrations across Bengal.
After losing the toss and being put to field, KKR produced an impeccable bowling performance to skittle SRH for a mere 113, the lowest total ever recorded in an IPL final. Mitchell Starc set the tone with a sensational first over, removing Abhishek Sharma with a delivery that pitched on leg-stump and sharply nipped away to hit the top of off-stump. Starc’s magic continued as he dismissed Rahul Tripathi, leaving SRH floundering at 21/3 within the first five overs.
First-change bowler Harshit Rana sustained the pressure, claiming the wicket of Nitish Reddy for 13. Andre Russell further dented SRH’s hopes by dismissing Aiden Markram, reducing the team to 62/5 by the 11th over. With every KKR bowler chipping in, SRH struggled to build any substantial partnerships, culminating in a dismal total of 113 runs.
In response, KKR’s chase was spearheaded by an aggressive Venkatesh Iyer, who remained unbeaten on 52 off just 26 balls. Rahmanullah Gurbaz provided solid support with a quick 39, ensuring KKR reached the target with 57 balls to spare. The chase was marked by confident stroke play and precise shot selection, leaving SRH bowlers with little chance to make an impact. KKR’s innings lasted for just 72 minutes while it took 90 minutes to start the presentation. This left the fans and everyone around frustrated.
