In a remarkable feat, Yuzvendra Chahal has surpassed the legendary Sri Lankan fast bowler Lasith Malinga to become the second-highest wicket-taker in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The Indian leg-spinner achieved this milestone as he picked up his 171st wicket today against Rajasthan Royals in the ongoing IPL 2023.
Chahal, who played a major part of his career for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), has been a consistent performer in the Indian Premier League over the years. He has played 133 matches in the IPL so far (current game included) and has been an instrumental part of the Rajasthan Royals bowling attack this season. With this achievement, Chahal has now joined the elite club of bowlers who have picked up more than 170 wickets in the IPL.
The 32-year-old spinner has been in excellent form this season, picking up crucial wickets at crucial moments for his team. He has already taken 5 wickets in two matches this season and is currently the fifth-highest wicket-taker in the tournament.
Chahal’s achievement is even more impressive considering he has achieved it in just 132 matches, whereas Malinga played 122 matches to pick up 170 wickets. The only bowler ahead of Chahal now is the legendary Caribbean all-rounder Dwayne Bravo, who has picked up 150 wickets in 160 matches.
On the 4th ball of the 16th over, Yuzvendra Chahal achieved his 171st wicket. Chahal was delivering to Jitesh Sharma, and as the batsman moved down the pitch as he attempted to hit an inside-out shot to a low full-toss. However, Sharma couldn’t get under the ball completely, which led to a lack of required elevation. Instead, the ball went straighter and flew towards the long-off region, where a fielder was stationed.
The fielder, Riyan Parag, reacted quickly and moved swiftly to his left, positioning himself perfectly to take the catch. Jitesh’s shot found Parag at long-off, and the home crowd erupted in excitement and joy at this crucial moment of the match. Chahal’s excellent bowling skills and Parag’s athletic ability led to an unforgettable moment in the game.
