After Shreyas Iyer’s injury, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have been dealt yet another devastating blow. The first One Day International (ODI) between Sri Lanka and New Zealand was played on March 25 in Auckland without pacer Lockie Ferguson. According to the most recent information, Ferguson has a hamstring injury. Shakib Al Hasan and Litton Das of Bangladesh will not play for KKR because of the Ireland series. During the practice session, Nitish Rana suffered from an ankle injury. Thus, things are turning from bad to worse for the Knight Riders.
With so many injuries in the camp, their experienced players need to step up and deliver for the team. The West Indian all-rounder Andre Russell is the X-factor of the KKR lineup. He has been the pillar of the Kolkata side for several years.
Russell was again one of KKR’s top players in their below-average season last year, scoring 335 runs at a strike rate of 174.48. He hit 32 sixes in the tournament. The all-rounder took 17 wickets with the ball as well, which is a record for him in an IPL.
With the bat, Russell needs to have a decent season and help the Knights put on a competitive total on the board. The lineup is inexperienced and lacks firepower. Russell has done the finishing role many times and thus is a reliable batter in the lineup.
In the absence of Lockie Ferguson and uncertainty about the playing position of Tim Southee, Russell is the senior pro with the ball. He needs to bowl in the powerplay as well as at the death. He is the only bowler with the experience of bowling at death.
KKR will need to find a captaincy replacement for Iyer in this year’s IPL. They don’t have many choices in the squad, which is an issue. Only Tim Southee and Shakib Al Hasan have experience leading at the highest level, but due to squad combinations, it’s possible that neither pacer from New Zealand nor the all-rounder from Bangladesh will always be in the starting lineup. Nitish Rana and Venkatesh Iyer are two good possibilities among Indian players. But they have not led their side in domestic competitions.
Here the role of Rusell, as a captain comes into the picture. Russel, one of the most effective match-winners for the KKR team, formerly served as captain of the Jamaica Tallawahs in the CPL. He can thus be given the added responsibility of captaincy. The added responsibility might bring the best out of him helping KKR reach the playoffs.
