IPL 2023: Here’s the reason why Shardul Thakur is not playing today’s IPL Match against Delhi Capitals

Before the game between the Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, the toss was delayed by more than an hour due to unexpected rain in the nation’s capital. The home team’s captain David Warner decided to bowl first. Even the most pessimistic Delhi Capitals fans would have expected their team to perform better than lose five games off the bat.

In today’s match, Litton Das and Jason Roy are making their debut for the Kolkata Knight Riders. However, fast bowling superstar, Lockie Ferguson was excluded from the playing 11. But the biggest surprising exclusion was that of Shardul Thakur. The Indian all-rounder was dropped from the side.

Why is Lockie Ferguson not playing today?

Shardul Thakur was not even included in the “Impact Player” list meaning that he was dropped. He was playing the role of a batting all-rounder in the side. Kolkata opted to play an extra batter in today’s match with Jason Roy, Litton Das, Venkatesh Iyer, Nitish Rana, Mandeep Singh, and Rinku Singh as their frontline batters. Thus KKR went in with 5 specialist bowlers in Sunil Narine, Umesh Yadav, Varun Chakravarthy, Kulwant Khejroliya, and Suyash Sharma who might come as an impact player in the second innings. If needed, Andre Russell can chip in with a few overs. Khejroliya was opted ahead of Shardul due to his superior bowling skills.

What did the captains say at the toss?

Nitish Rana: We are playing after 3 years thanks to Covid. Every thing feels new. We have four changes. Tough to remember. If we play as a unit. It should be tough to beat us.

David Warner: We will have a bowl first. Weather being around, you don’t know what the total is going to be. We haven’t been disciplined with the ball. We have two changes.

Kolkata Knight Riders (Playing XI): Jason Roy, Litton Das(w), Venkatesh Iyer, Nitish Rana(c), Mandeep Singh, Andre Russell, Rinku Singh, Sunil Narine, Kulwant Khejroliya, Umesh Yadav, Varun Chakaravarthy

Delhi Capitals (Playing XI): David Warner(c), Philip Salt(w), Mitchell Marsh, Manish Pandey, Axar Patel, Aman Hakim Khan, Lalit Yadav, Kuldeep Yadav, Anrich Nortje, Ishant Sharma, Mukesh Kumar
