IPL 2023: Here’s the reason why Avesh Khan not playing today’s IPL Match against Royal Challengers Bangalore

In a surprising move, the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) have left out their fast bowler Avesh Khan from their Playing XI for the match against Royals Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the Ekana Sports City Stadium in Lucknow. This has raised eyebrows amongst fans and experts alike as Avesh Khan has been one of the mainstays of the LSG bowling attack.

Royals Challengers Bangalore skipper Faf du Plessis won the toss and elected to bat first. Even though Avesh has been named in the impact player list, it is highly unlikely that Avesh Khan will feature in tonight’s game as LSG will be bowling first and it has been a bit of a tradition to play the impact player in the second innings. Instead, LSG have brought in the off-spinner Krishnappa Gowtham as a tactical change. The pitch in Lucknow is expected to be slow and spin-friendly, and Gowtham could prove to be a valuable addition to the LSG squad.

Why is Avesh Khan not playing today?

There could be several reasons behind the decision to leave out Avesh Khan. One of the primary reasons could be his poor form this season. In seven games so far, Avesh has only picked up six wickets and has been leaking runs at an average of 9.52 runs per over. Even in the last game against the Punjab Kings, Avesh conceded 28 runs in his two overs without picking up a single wicket.

Another reason behind this decision could be LSG’s strategy to strengthen their spin attack. The pitch in Lucknow is slow and has been known to assist spin bowlers, and LSG could be looking to exploit this by bringing in Gowtham. Krishnappa Gowtham has featured in 31 IPL matches so far and has taken 19 wickets at an economy rate of 8.26. He can also prove valuable as a batter lower down the order as he has an IPL career strike rate of 168.
