IPL 2021: Will Steve Smith find a place in the Delhi Capitals XI Now?

What a close match it was in Mumbai! Rajasthan Royals snatched victory from the jaw of defeat, thanks to the brilliant late showings from Chris Morris. It was a low scoring match where Delhi Capitals could set a mere target of 147 for the loss eight wickets against the Royals. Rajasthan struggled throughout as the entire top-order had a major collapse. They were 42/5 in 9.2 overs and the fate of the game was almost decided. David Miller’s 62 off 43 with seven boundaries and two fours was a game saving innings but it was Morris’ four maximums at the end that won the match for the Royals. The Royals needed 27 runs in last two overs and nobody expected a win from them. Morris went berserk and smashed two huge sixes in both overs to seal the memorable victory for Rajasthan with two balls remaining.

IPL 2021: Virat Kohli Risks Ban if he Repeats Outburst

Earlier in the day, Rishabh Pant scored a half-century for Delhi Capitals but none of his colleagues from the top order could contribute with some decent numbers. The same set of batsmen that chased down 189 runs successfully could not score double digits. Lalit Yadav who replaced Amit Yadav is today’s match scored 20 followed by Tom Curran’s 21 and Chris Woakes’ 15 and that was all to save Delhi innings. Shimron Hetmyer was replaced by Kagiso Rabada in the Capitals team today but fans started raising questioning over Steve Smith’s exclusion from the playing XI after such disappointing outcome.

Delhi Capitals can utilize him in absence of Shreyas Iyer in the top order, especially when Ajinkya Rahane is not an ideal T20 player considering current form. He might not be the best bat but can be tried after today’s disaster. The Capitals have two English fast bowlers in Chris Woakes and Tom Curran who are quite similar bowlers in nature. Woakes is regularly giving early breakthroughs, however Curran is not that consistent. So, the Capitals can think of replacing Curran by Umesh Yadav and bring Steve Smith in place of Rahane keeping the overseas quota intact. They also have another experienced Indian fast bowler option in Ishant Sharma.
