Sunil Narine has been a mainstay for Kolkata Knight Riders for last few years. Despite being a key performer in multiple matches, he faced a tough outing in IPL 2020. He was not consistent and failed to perform in multiple occasions. Moreover, KKR had to deal with Narine’s action issue. Narine’s action has been questioned often. When KKKR bought their old horse Shakib Al Hasan in the IPL 2021, it was clear that they wanted a back-up for Narine. Experts predicted Shakib to get preference over Narine in the playing XI. Even Eoin Morgan, KKR captain spoke about Shakib Al Hasan yesterday.
“Shakib Al Hasan gives us a different dynamic in the team,” Morgan told kkr.in. “Given that we play at different venues where the conditions change quite a lot, you have a spin-bowling allrounder who had success in international cricket and IPL at different stages. If called upon, he can definitely deliver.”
No place for Narine
Clearly, KKR management thought of choosing Shakib for the first game of IPL 2021. In their first match of the edition, the Kolkata side chose to go with Pat Cummins, Eoin Morgan, Andre Russell, and Shakib Al Hasan as their four overseas players. There was clearly no place for Narine since KKR had to manage the overseas quota too.
