IPL 2020: Ravichandran Ashwin might lose captaincy says Anil Kumble

Anil Kumble, the new head coach of Kings XI Punjab has a massive challenge in front of him. One of them will definitely include taking a final call on Ravichandran Ashwin. According to Kumble’s version, there is still no certainty about Ashwin leading KXIP in next IPL.

Kumble on resuming coaching

A fearless personality Kumble did not have a great experience dealing with the Indian men’s team. He had to resign following rifts with the skipper Virat Kohli. Since then, Kumble hasn’t been in the coaching saddle. But the upcoming IPL will see him coming back to the arena once again. When asked about his decision on resuming coaching career, Kumble said, “I have always enjoyed being among the players. I may have been a cricket administrator and now a commentator, but it’s being on the field that I like the most. To contribute and give back the experiences I’ve had and share my thought process with the players. If I can help develop their game and fast track whatever they want to achieve, I’m always up for it.”

And certainly, Kumble has a lot to do with KXIP’s overall development. The franchise is currently busy in revamping the core of the team and R Ashwin’s captaincy is at the stake for the same reason. There were speculations that Ashwin could join Delhi Capitals. But the team’s co-owner Ness Wadia confirmed that the franchise would like to retain the star player.

Kumble on R Ashwin

Kumble shared his opinion on the same line. But he clearly mentioned that Ashwin might have to lose his captaincy. “I think any decision on Ashwin or any other player is an internal matter of the team. Ash (Ashwin) is a fantastic asset for the team. We all know his contributions for the Indian team over that last so many years. He has been a brilliant player for India. But there is no certainty yet that he’ll be the captain this year. Moving forward, we still haven’t taken any decision on anyone for that matter. We need to sit down with the (Kings XI) board.”
