IPL 2020: MS Dhoni Loses his Cool After Another Controversial Umpire Decision

The umpires have been under constant pressure in the ongoing Indian Premier League. In the encounter between Kings XI Punjab and Delhi Capitals, umpire Nitin Menon wrongly signalled a short run during the chase of Punjab. KXIP team ended up losing that game in the super over. There was a huge rage from the KXIP camp against that decision that cost them the game.

In the recent game against Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings, the umpires came under the scanner once again. The incident happened late in the first innings when Rajasthan Royals were batting.

Deepak Chahar was bowling the 18th over and Tom Curran was facing the fifth bowl of the over. Curran attempted a pull shot to a delivery that waa slightly back of the length. There was a slight noise and a deflection as the ball went past the batsman. The wicketkeeper MS Dhoni grabbed the ball and appealed in unison with the bowler.

Dhoni’s mistake or the umpire’s

Dhoni generally doesn’t appeal when it’s not out. The umpire raised his finger that left Tom Curran in total disbelief. He wanted to take a DRS but Rahul Tewatia had already used up the review. Curran just wasn’t ready to go back to the pavilion. Just then, the replay was shown on the big screen at the venue.

It showed that the batsman hadn’t hit the ball and instead, the ball had clipped the thigh pad. Also, the ball didn’t carry to the keeper and bounced just in front of the gloves. After watching the video, the umpires got together and Curran waited with patient eyes as if he would be called back directly.

The umpires realized their mistake and went for the review of the catch by themselves. Dhoni wasn’t impressed at all by that move. He walked up to the umpire and argued that the decision to go for the review was made after watching the video, which according to the CSK captain wasn’t correct.

The replay was played again and the third umpire ruled it not out. Tom Curran survived and came back to bat again. But Dhoni still wasn’t done with that. He kept arguing and his rare loss of temper was evident. It’s very rare that we see MS Dhoni lose his cool but it was also rare Dhoni appealing when it was clearly not out.
