Here’s why Shane Watson is not playing today against MI

A rare disappointing journey in the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League so far made CSK take a tough call. Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s team decided to drop their second-highest run-scorer, Shane Watson. Watson has scored 285 runs in 10 matches thus far at an average of 31.66 and a strike rate of 125. Hence, excluding Watson in an important match comes as a surprise to many. But Chennai Super Kings probably wanted to try whatever they have to stay in the race. They finally included the veteran, Imran Tahir who has yet to play an IPL match this season.

Imran Tahir was the highest wicket-taker of IPL 2019 with 17 wickets in total to his name. No wonder he had an influential role behind the journey of Chennai Super Kings to the final. Although Tahir has not played any match for CSK yet, it looks like CSK management wants to rely on their old warhorse in this crisis. So, to include Imran Tahir, they had to sacrifice the service of Shane Watson this considering the overseas quota.

While speaking about the planning and team, Mahendra Singh Dhoni said, “Last game we played here the wicket played slightly better in the second innings, so not much of a problem. Once we landed here we had a 14-day break and before that we had a seven day-camp in Chennai and once we’re here it became slightly difficult with the quarantine and there were a few phases where game went out of our hands and the batting wasn’t also upto the mark, It happens in cricket and there are quite a few reasons for why we haven’t been upto the mark.”

He then added, “Three changes for us. Kedar Jadhav, Shane Watson, Piyush Chawla out and Jagadeesan, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Tahir are in.”

Chennai Super Kings Playing XI:

Sam Curran, Faf du Plessis, Ambati Rayudu, N Jagadeesan, MS Dhoni (C/wk), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ravindra Jadeja, Deepak Chahar, Shardul Thakur, Josh Hazlewood, Imran Tahir
