IPL 2020: Here’s the reason why Chris Gayle is not playing today against Delhi Capitals

Chris Gayle, the Universe Boss failed to feature in the Kings XI Punjab squad for their first IPL 2020 game. There has not been any official announcement yet about why Punjab decided to go without Gayle. Let’s find out the reason why Chris Gayle is not playing today match against Delhi Capitals

Why Chris Gayle is not playing today IPL Match

In the second IPL 2020 match in Dubai, Kings Xi Punjab won the toss and chose to field first. Punjab went with four overseas players- Glenn Maxwell, Nicholas Pooran, Chris Jordan and Sheldon Cottrell. Both captains included a couple of overseas fast bowlers and T20 specialists. The green track in Dubai shows why they went for the same.

At the toss, KL Rahul who is leading an IPL side for the first time said, “We will bowl first. Fresh wicket. Don’t really know what to expect. I’m confident and so is the entire team, great opportunity to go out and play some cricket. Staying indoors was difficult, but it also gave us time to think about our strategy. [Glenn] Maxwell, [Nicholas] Pooran, [Chris] Jordan and [Sheldon] Cottrell are our four overseas players,” Rahul said during the toss. Shreyas Iyer echoed Rahul’s thoughts and said, “We would have bowled first as well..”

Why no Gayle?

Why KL Rahul decided to go without Chris Gayle was not asked to him at the toss. So far, there has not been any official announcement as well. Chris Gayle ended as the second highest run scorer of Kings XI Punjab in 2019. Gayle skipped the Caribbean Premier League this year as well and went to UAE in a fresh mind to play IPL 2020.

While there is no known reason behind such, it could be assumed that the overseas restrictions forced KXIP management to take the decision. Moreover, four KXIP overseas players have been in action for a while unlike Gayle. Nicholas Pooran and Chris Jordan, both joined the squad after showing good show in recently concluded tournaments. Sheldon Cottrell is another CPL star and T20 specialist and keeping Maxwell out after a recent stunning century was probably too much to ask for.
