IPL 2020: Four Things to Know About SRH’s New Admit Virat Singh

A dashing left-handed stroke-maker, Virat Singh was born on 8th December 1997 in Jharkhand. Followed by a successful trial with Sunrisers Hyderabad he was later bagged by the same franchise for Rs 1.9 Crore during the IPL Auction in December.

Things to know about Virat Singh

1.) He was under the radar from a very young age as he made debut for Jharkhand for all three formats at the age of 16. He was also part of the Indian Under 19 set up and played quite a few matches for them including a match-winning 60 in Colombo. However, he was not picked for the Indian Under 19 squad for World Cup 2016. He took a small break and kept performing at the domestic level to catch the eye of many including the IPL team scouts.

2.) Although Singh never played in IPL he already has a solid experience of 56 T20 matches. He has scored more than 1500 runs at an average above 35 and a strike rate touching 125 so far. He has also played 30 first-class matches and 40 List-A matches for his state, zone, and other domestic teams. He was one of the top scorers in the 2017-18 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. But his moment of reckoning came during the 2019-20 season when he scored a brilliant 76 off 44 against Karnataka during the Super League stage.

3.) Singh also regularly played club cricket in England. He was part of the Seaham Park Cricket Club in the Durham league since 2018. He plays as an important overseas professional and helps his team as a strong middle-order batsman, finisher, and occasional leg-break bowler. This was great exposure for him and helped his growth both in and out of the ground.

4.) Singh comes from the same city as Mahendra Singh Dhoni and considers him as his idol. They also played together for Jharkhand as he got valuable tips from the man who has seen it all. Singh is confident that these tips will help him in handling the pressure of IPL. He is also excited to share the dressing room with David Warner and Kane Williamson and looking to make a mark for Sunrisers in the upcoming Indian Premier League.
