IPL 2020: DRS on 3rd Umpire’s Decision, Ever Seen That?

Something bizarre happened at the Indian Premier League today. When Kings XI Punjab was chasing down a mammoth score set by Sunrisers Hyderabad Mujeeb Ur Rahman’s dismissal saw the same delivery going through multiple reviews.

What happened?

During the Kings XI Punjab vs Sunrisers Hyderabad match controversy aroused regarding the dismissal of Mujeeb Ur Rahman. Khaleel Ahmed was bowling to Mujeeb and the left-arm pacer went round the wicket to change the angle to the batsman. His quick delivery beat Mujeeb and got the edge before going to the safe gloves of Jonny Bairstow. However, the umpires were not sure whether the ball directly went to the keeper from the edge or did it touch the ground and hence should be considered as a bump ball.

They took the help from the third umpire who after looking at multiple replays confirmed that it was a clean catch and not a bump ball. As it was a review to check whether it was a bump ball, the third umpire didn’t ask for the ultra edge. By this time, Mujeeb appealed for a review as he thought the ball did not touch the bat. It created confusion as the allocated 15 seconds for requesting a review was already passed. The Sunrisers Hyderabad players also complained that Mujeeb took this decision after guided by the team members in the dugout. However, the umpires went for the replay which again confirmed that Mujeeb had hit the ball and hence he was given out for the second time on the same delivery.

Mujeeb Ur Rahman was out for just one run. Eventually, Sunrisers Hyderabad won by 69 runs. Earlier Jonny Bairstow ( 97 off 55) and David Warner ( 52 off 40) had created the base for Sunrisers Hyderabad as the team ended up scoring 201 runs for the loss of six wickets. However, the youngster duo Ravi Bishnoi (3/29) and Arshdeep Singh (2/33) brought some positivity to the KXIP camp with their performances.
