IPL 2020: Can Chennai Super Kings still Make it to the Play-offs?

Even after a disastrous IPL so far, Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s team can still reach the playoffs. Chennai Super Kings who have managed to win only three matches so far are yet not out of the race from the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League.

CSK’s misery continues

Chennai Super Kings have been struggling hard to come in shape in this year’s IPL. In the history of the Indian Premier League, this is for the first time that Chennai Super Kings are looking absolutely out of track. Their misery started even before the start of the league when 13 of their members had tested covid positive. Then two veteran CSK players decided to quit this season and the significance of Suresh Raina and Harbhajan Singh in the CSK set-up cannot be ignored.

So far, in almost every match Chennai Super Kings have struggled visibly to find ways. The average age of the team is a huge problem and most of their senior members seem to be out of touch. Chennai Super Kings have played nine matches so far to manage only three victories. Currently, they are at 7th place followed by Rajasthan Royals at the bottom. The 5th and 6th ranked teams are Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kings XI Punjab and they have the same points as CSK. But especially with Kings XI Punjab, few of their matches were so close that KXIP could discuss the luck factor. With CSK, however, things are tricky. Even their biggest fan cannot claim that CSK would make a strong comeback to make it to the top four.

CSK’s chance to playoffs

Chennai Super Kings with a hundred percent success rate in their next five clashes can think of sealing a playoff place. But that will also depend a lot on the performance of other franchises too. But Chennai Super Kings need these 16 points anyhow to at least be in the competition of qualifying to the next level. Interestingly, even if CSK collect 14 points, they will still have some hope.

With 14 points in total, Chennai Super Kings can qualify for the playoffs if they can assure a good Net Run Rate. NRR plays a significant role and team with equal points ultimately looks up to the NRR for final rankings. Last season, Sunrisers Hyderabad had made it to the top four with only 12 points. So, if the Dhoni-led side can focus on each match and try to win them with good NRR, chances are not that slim.
