IPL 2020: BCCI may take IPL out of India

According to a BCCI source’s version to ANI, the board is discussing all the possible options to hold the IPL 2020. Even it means to take the league outside India, the board will consider the same as the last resort as saying by the source.

BCCI source reveals

With the nationwide lockdown getting unlocked time to time and the chance of postponing of the ICC men’s T20 World Cup getting higher, the BCCI is considering all possible option to organize the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League. A source revealed the same to ANI, “The board is looking at all options. If it comes to taking IPL out of India, it may happen but as the last option.” The source added, “If that’s the only option then we will consider it. We have done it in the past also and we can do it again but the first preference will be to host it in India.”

If the 2020 edition is shifted abroad, this will not be the first time that board will be arranging the league outside India. In 2009, the second edition of the league was hosted in South Africa and the 2014 edition was played in India and the UAE. The source added that the board needs clarity regarding the T20 World Cup before taking any further step. “We will await for clarity over T20 World Cup from ICC before discussing anything further. But I can tell that as of now no decision has been taken.”

Dhumal explains

Even BCCI treasurer Arun Dhumal while speaking to Timesnownews echoed the same. He said, “If it is safe for our players to play IPL in India, then it would be our first preference but in case the situation does not permit and we are not left with any choice and a window is available then we can look at moving IPL 2020 out of India.”

Dhumal opines that in the wake of the pandemic no country is going to be absolutely safe for the players and the situation is almost the same everywhere. “No country is safe from the Covid-19 pandemic so it’s not going to be easy if we decided to shift IPL out of the country and take players to Srilanka, Dubai or South Africa. The situation is almost the same everywhere, international travel restrictions are also a problem. Srilanka was okay but in the last couple of days cases have risen there so problem are there, we need to deal with them.”
