IPL 2020 Auction: Focus area for Mumbai Indians

Mumbai Indians are the winner of the 2019 Indian Premier League and one of the most successful teams in the IPL history. They boast of a very strong team with some of the world’s best players in T20 cricket like the captain Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Quinton de Kock and Trent Boult. They had most of the bases covered and as expected with a successful team, they have retained 18 players.

MI has a top-class bowling attack which was enhanced by the inclusion of Boult. Boult would compete with Mitchell McCleneghan for a spot in the eleven along with Bumrah and Malinga. Their spin attack looks light as they have traded their leg spinner Mayank Markande. However, they already have another classy leg spinner in Rahul Chahar and will get good support from all-rounder Krunal Pandya. They also have young Anukul Roy and veteran Jayant Yadav as back up and if they want more spin cover, they can go for Indian retained players like Piyush Chawala and Varun Chakravarthy.

MI also has an excellent set of all-rounders where along with Krunal Pandya, they have Hardik Pandya. He is recovering from a Surgery now and will also be supported by a couple of West Indian options like experienced Kieron Pollard and newcomer Sherfane Rutherford.

The only area where Mumbai Indians need some well-planned buys is the middle order. Last year they used Rohit Sharma and Surya Kumar Yadav at the top and then a host of all-rounders in the middle but would like to have a good set of middle-order batsmen to provide solidity in their team. They have some useful options from overseas players like Eoin Morgan, David Miller, Shimron Hetmyer, and Colin de Grandhomme.

Along with signing some big names, MI can also think of the future and look to bid for the youngster Yashasvi Jaiswal in case he is part of the IPL auction process. Jaiswal plays for Mumbai in the domestic cricket and it will be an excellent opportunity for him to learn from some of the world’s best players in the camp.

MI has won four out of last seven editions of the IPL and would look to build their team even stronger in the auction to go for an unprecedented fifth IPL title in 2020.
