Delhi Capitals hosted Chennai Super Kings at the Feroz Shah Kotla in the 5th match of the season. Both teams had dominated in their matches prior to this one. But the defending champions proved to be too good for the hosts. CSK inflicted a one-sided win and reached the top of the points table.
IPL 2019 Match 5 DC vs CSK Highlights
Shreyas Iyer won the toss and elected to bat first. He became the first captain to do so in IPL 2019. Their big score batting first against Mumbai Indians must have prompted that decision. However, MS Dhoni wanted to field first as he reckoned that there is uncertainty over how the pitches will behave at the start of the season.
The surface looked slow and difficult to bat on. Prithvi Shaw looked to go on the attack initially. He did manage to strike 5 boundaries but departed in the bid to go for a big shot. Deepak Chahar accounted for his wicket for 24 in the 5th over. Shikhar Dhawan, on the other hand, was defensive in his approach as the score reached 43/1 after the powerplay.
Dhawan’s slow fifty, Bravo’s 3-fer
Shreyas Iyer and Dhawan battled hard against the spinners as run making became difficult once the ball got older. After 11 overs, DC reached 70/1. Imran Tahir trapped Iyer in front for 18 in the 12th over. Rishabh Pant came out to bat and he was aggressive from the beginning. He smashed 2 fours and a six to provide the much-needed momentum to the innings.
But Dwayne Bravo struck twice to remove Pant and Colin Ingram in the same over to dent DC’s progress. Ravindra Jadeja castled Keemo Paul for a duck while Dhawan finally brought up his fifty in the 17th over. But he fell immediately for 51 from 47 balls. Rahul Tewatia and Axar Patel dragged the score to 147/6.
Initial attack laid the foundation for an easy chase
CSK began the chase with Shane Watson in the mood to keep the run rate high. On a slow surface, he realized the importance of scoring runs against the new ball. But he lost his partner Ambati Rayudu for just 6 when Ishant Sharma got him out caught for 5. Watson carried on and Suresh Raina too took advantage of the fielding restrictions. CSK reached 58/1 after 6 overs.
It was a crucial powerplay which the visitors took full advantage of in a tricky chase. Watson slammed Amit Mishra for two sixes in the 7th over. But the leggie got his revenge when he got the opener out stumped for 44 in the same over. Raina was looking good in the middle as he was joined by Kedar Jadhav.
Mishra once again came into the act and bagged the prized scalp of Raina for 30 in the 11th over. Watson and Raina’s aggressive batting did wonders for the lower middle-order which had the breathing space. Even though the scoring rate remained slow after that yet MS Dhoni and Kedar Jadhav could afford that because of the low required run rate. Without making a fuss, they brought the side home with 2 balls to spare.
