It was down to the one last contest in IPL 2019 to decide who takes home the coveted title for the record 4th time. Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings produced a match which was worthy of a final. Just like 2017, Mumbai won the match off the last ball and that too, by one run. MI remained unbeaten against CSK this year as they won all the 4 games. In the end, Mumbai Indians became the first team to win 4 IPL titles.
Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to bat as he felt runs on the board in a big game would be crucial. Quinton de Kock and Rohit provided a blistering start as they reached close to 50 in the 5th over. Shardul Thakur gave CSK the first breakthrough when he removed de Kock for 29. Deepak Chahar once again accounted for the wicket of Rohit to bring the score to 45/2 in the 6th over.
Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav came together and in the bid to rebuild, played slowly. The pressure built and they were forced to up the ante. In doing so, both fell in a quick succession. Krunal Pandya also fell cheaply. MI was down to 101/5 in the 15th over. The onus was on Kieron Pollard and Hardik Pandya to give them a flourishing finish.
Both began to strike big and threatened to score big. But Deepak Chahar bowled a terrific penultimate over and removed Hardik and Rahul Chahar. However, Pollard was still out there. His unbeaten knock of 41 off 25 balls helped MI get to a fighting total of 149/8 at the end of 20 overs.
Chasing a moderate target, CSK got off to a flourishing start. Faf du Plessis was the aggressor as he went after the new ball. Krunal halted his stay to 25 in the 4th over. Shane Watson was joined by Suresh Raina as the duo batted for a partnership. However, the pressure was applied by the Mumbai bowlers, especially Rahul Chahar.
Rahul removed Raina and then Bumrah accounted for the wicket of Ambati Rayudu soon. The all-important Dhoni was out in the middle in the crucial chase. But a run-out ended his short stay. When he departed for 2, courtesy of a direct hit by Ishan Kishan, MI came back in style. CSK was reduced to 82/4 in the 13th over.
Watson was riding on his luck as the opposition fielders dropped 3 catches of him. Alongside Dwayne Bravo, he dragged the chase towards the target. CSK needed 62 runs from the last 5 overs. Lasith Malinga was taken for 20 runs in the 16th over. Bumrah’s 17th went for just 4.
Rohit brought Krunal for the 18th over. But that move backfired and the spinner conceded 20 runs as Watson slammed 3 consecutive sixes. With 18 in the bag, Bumrah have away just 5 runs off the first 5 balls. But de Kock left an easy take behind the stumps that went for four byes.
9 runs were needed from the last over. Malinga had the ball in hand who had been missing the mark thus far. But he redeemed himself and bowled superb yorkers. Watson attempted to take a couple of runs off the 4th ball but an accurate throw from the boundary by Krunal found him short. His knock of 80 from 59 ended there finally. Shardul Thakur collected 2 runs that left 2 to get from the final ball.
Malinga had been nailing the yorkers thus far and the batsman lined up for that. But the Sri Lankan maestro bowled a slower ball that hit Thakur on the pad dead in front of the stumps. That was the moment Mumbai Indians won another final by just 1 run. The Men in Blue became the first team to win the IPL title 4 time
