IPL 2018: 5 players Royal Challengers Bangalore should look to retain

#5 Kedar Jadhav

Another player who has made a name for himself in Indian cricket in the last couple of years is Kedar Jadhav. A useful middle-order batsman who can build the innings as well as accelerate when required is an absolute asset for any T20 team. Additionally, he is one of those street-smart batsmen who can churn out runs with cheeky shots.

Although his batting record of 893 runs in 57 IPL innings doesn’t talk volumes about his capabilities yet he has shown in the past how he can shape the innings if the top order collapses. Jadhav is not known for his bowling in IPL but his round-arm action that skids the ball with a very low bounce has proved to be useful while donning the blue jersey and it’s an aspect that the captain can look at in the shortest format of the game.

Royal Challengers Bangalore, a team that is massively followed and has always been star-studded. Before the start of each season of the Indian Premier League, the RCB stars are always in the limelight and there are talks about how this team has a great chance to become the champions. But despite having all the charismatic names, the franchise has failed to win even a single season of IPL. RCB has seen several captains like Rahul Dravid, Anil Kumble, Daniel Vettori and Virat Kohli but none of these maestros have been able to turn the tides. 10 seasons are done and dusted and with the auction for the 11th season set to take place soon, the RCB camp will be aiming to build a strong squad to have another shot at the title. They do have some big names that they would look to retain.

Here are the 5 players that Royal Challengers Bangalore might hold on to

#1 Virat Kohli

It's almost obvious that RCB's first choice will be the skipper Virat Kohli. Since 2013, he has been leading the franchise and from then on, went on to lead the Indian team as well. The right-hander has a fabulous record in IPL having amassed 4418 runs in 141 innings at an average of 37.44 and a strike rate of 129.83. His prowess in the shortest format of the game increased massively in 2016 where he scored 4 centuries in a single season and ended up with 973 runs which is the most by any player in a season. He is also the second highest run-getter in the IPL history only behind Suresh Raina. Even though he and his franchise had a paltry season last year yet the franchise won't look beyond him for the first choice.

#2 Chris Gayle

Talk about T20 cricket and it goes without saying that Chris Gayle is the biggest name in the history since the format evolved. He has been lighting up IPL since the first edition with his towering sixes. The highest ever score of 175 belongs to him and he has ended up being the highest run-getter twice. In 100 IPL innings, he has accumulated 3626 runs at an average of 41.2 and a thunderous strike rate of 151.21. Even though he had a poor run in the last edition and there were doubts over his capabilities with the growing age yet his recent performances in the Bangladesh Premier League has answered all the questions. The Jamaican, while playing for Rangpur Riders, scored 146 runs off 69 balls that included 18 sixes and won the league for the franchise. That effort has definitely put him back into the contention for a retention.

#3 AB de Villiers

If Virat is a certainty, so is AB de Villiers. The South African is hugely popular in India and his long stint with Royal Challengers Bangalore is one of the reasons for that. The Bangalore crowd loves him and very seldom has he failed to entertain them. The Chinnaswamy stadium has witnessed several of AB's special knocks over the years. The right-hander has accounted for 3473 runs in 118 IPL innings at an average of 38.16 and when it comes to the strike rate, his 148.17 is not too far behind from Gayle's. He has 3 centuries to his name to go with 22 fifties. Along with Virat, he makes a formidable pair and the one that the fans would love to see much more of.

#4 Yuzvendra Chahal

The latest sensation of Indian cricket is the one to watch out for in the future, not just in IPL but in international cricket too. Yuzvendra Chahal's masterful leg-spin has given him a prominent slot in the Indian limited-overs sides. But it all started for him while he rose amongst the ranks while playing for RCB. Virat Kohli trusted him to be the spinner in the side and he repaid the faith of the skipper completely. He ended up being the second highest wicket-taker in the last edition with 21 scalps to his name from 13 games. The 27-year-old has picked up 70 wickets in 55 innings and given the fact he bowls at the Chinnaswamy, a ground which is batsman-friendly, to bag wickets at this rate is commendable.

#5 Kedar Jadhav
