Injured Dhawan out, Samson replaces him for West Indies T20I series

Shikhar Dhawan is out of the upcoming three-match T20I series against West Indies scheduled to start from December 6. An injury on his left knee is the reason for the same. Sanju Samson has been named the replacement for Dhawan.

Samson replaces Dhawan

Shikhar Dhawan suffered from an injury in his left knee during a Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy T20 game for Delhi earlier this month. He got a deep cut on the knee while diving on-field and had to visit the hospital to treat the injury. The BCCI meanwhile included him in the Indian squad that would take on West Indies for the T20I series. But according to the reports Dhawan is still recovering from his injury.

The BCCI Medical Team assessed his injury on Tuesday and took the call of keeping him out of the series for recovery. A BCCI media released on Wednesday read, “Dhawan suffered a deep cut on his left knee during a Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy game against Maharashtra in Surat. The BCCI Medical Team assessed him on Tuesday to review the healing of his wound. The BCCI Medical Team has suggested that Dhawan needs some more time for his stitches to come off and his wound to heal completely”.

A second chance for Samson

The selection committee chose Sanju Samson, the wicketkeeper-batsman as Dhawan’s replacement. Samson who earned his maiden call up for the T20I series against Bangladesh did not feature in any playing XI. Despite not getting any chance to prove himself he was not chosen for the series against West Indies. It looks like the selection committee wanted Sanju Samson as a back-up middle-order batsman for the Bangladesh series in the absence of Virat Kohli. The decision of keeping him out of the squad for the upcoming Windies series was hugely criticised.

Shashi Tharoor took Twitter to share his opinion on the same. Harbhajan Singh replied to the tweet saying, “I guess they r testing his heart #selectionpanelneedtobechanged need strong people there.. hope dada @SGanguly99 will do the needful”.

India squad for West Indies T20Is: Virat Kohli (C), Rohit Sharma (VC), KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, Manish Pandey, Rishabh Pant (WK), Shivam Dube, Washington Sundar, Ravindra Jadeja, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Deepak Chahar, Mohammed Shami, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Sanju Samson
