India’s 2007 T20 World Cup hero is rejecting selfie requests. Why?

India’s hero of 2007 T20 World Cup campaign is now busy helping people combat the COVID-19 pandemic. Joginder Sharma spoke about the current situation to Sportstar also explained how fans still recognize him because of his nameplate.

A hero from 2007 T20 World Cup

Joginder Sharma became the household name after India’s victory in 2007 World Cup. He still recalls the moments that gave him fame and reputation overnight. “In life, there are some unforgettable moments, and winning the T20 World Cup was one of the best moments and I still remember it. You all saw me as a cricketer, but now I am in a different role. However, the common thing is I am still serving my country.”

He is currently a deputy superintendent of police in Hissar district of Haryana. While asked about the duties during the ongoing pandemic threat, Sharma compared it to the 2007 World Cup campaign and explained how roles are specifically defined and divided. He said, “During the 2007 World T20, all of us knew what our roles were exactly. And we had our captain M. S. Dhoni who knew how to get the best from the players. Presently, from the superintendent of police to the director-general of police, everyone is involved and we get necessary instructions from them on how to deal with the situation.”

Sharma on COVID-19

The Coronavirus situation has changed everyone’s life all across the world. While the health sector is constantly busy in saving lives, the police have to ensure safety as well. They are making sure that nobody comes out of the home without any emergency. In various places of India and the world, the police department is also helping people by delivering them necessary stuff. Sharma on the same note also mentioned how they need to take care of themselves too. “It’s our job to protect people, but at the same time we need to protect ourselves. It’s important to educate people and tell them the risks of venturing out at this moment. I keep reminding people that this war can be won only by staying indoors.”

Sharma is personally doing his bit when the cricket lovers are asking him for a selfie or autograph. The responsible police officer in Haryana is presently rejecting every such request with a promise of fulfilling them once the scare is over. “I keep telling them that I would personally visit them and give them autographs or selfies once the coronavirus threat is over. When they approach me, I educate them on social distancing and the use of masks, hand sanitisers and basic hygiene. As I said, it’s time to educate people as not all have access to television or newspapers.”
