Indian National Cricket Team Under Kohli Can Be the Best Ever in History: Gavaskar

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar believes that current Indian team led by Virat Kohli has the potential to become the greatest Indian cricket team ever in the history. In an interaction with The Telegraph he opined that upcoming series wins in England and South Africa would help them earning the title.

What’s the Story?

Sunil Gavaskar told if Indian national cricket team led by Virat Kohli wins the upcoming Test series in England and South Africa later this year and earlier next year, the side can well claim the best Indian cricket team status. According to him, South Africa is the final frontier for the Indian team because Indian team has not yet won a Test series in South Africa. India is currently topping the ICC Test team rankings and will be seen playing final of the ICC World Test Championship against New Zealand. A win in the same means India’s position as the best team will be stamped at the moment. The Indian national cricket team has won Test series in England in 1971, 1986, and 2007, in Australia in 2018-19, and recently in 2020-21 and has defeated New Zealand in Test series in 1967-68, and 2009.

Gavaskar Explains

Hence, there’s enough reason of Gavaskar showering praise on the side and hoping it to be the best ever. Gavaskar also praised Virat Kohli for his leadership and his consistency as a captain. “The old saying that a captain or coach is only as good as the team is so true. This Indian team is blessed to have so many game-changers with both bat and ball which very few previous Indian teams have had.

Gavaskar added, “They have a wonderful opportunity to seal the deal as the greatest-ever Indian team by winning in England and especially South Africa later in the year. Having won in Australia earlier in the year (Indian teams have triumphed in England in 1971, 1986, 2007), South Africa now remains the final frontier to conquer for this team.”
