Captaincy Conundrum: India to Seek New Leader for Ireland Series as Hardik Pandya Focuses on Asia Cup

The three-match Twenty20 International series against Ireland may have a new skipper due to the anticipated Asia Cup training camp in the final week of August. The Asia Cup squad is expected to include regular T20I captain Hardik Pandya, therefore the selectors will likely look for a replacement.

August 18, 20, and 23 are the dates of the three Twenty20 Internationals, which will follow the end of the five-match series against the West Indies.

Who will captain the side?

Though speculation abounds as to who will serve as captain, it is certain that head coach Rahul Dravid wants every player who was chosen for the Asia Cup to be present during the camp. Jasprit Bumrah, who the Indian team management and selectors want to test in the Twenty20 games where he will only have a workload of up to four overs, may be the sole exception in this situation.

Bumrah, it goes without saying, has just returned from a lengthy 10-month injury hiatus during which he even underwent surgery.

Dravid proposed a seven-day training camp in Bengaluru to get ready for the Asia Cup. Before the team travels to Sri Lanka for the six-team intra-continental competition, the camp may begin on August 24 and 25. On September 2, India will play Pakistan in the opening match of the event, which is set to run from August 30 to September 17. It has since been revealed that due to this pre-arranged camp, Dravid and the members of his support team have been relieved of their duties for the Ireland T20I series, which runs from August 18 to 23.

On July 27 and 29, the Indian squad will play two of the three one-day internationals against the West Indies in Barbados. Pandya, Sanju Samson, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, and Umran Malik, the players chosen for the ODIs, have joined the team.

R Ashwin, Ajinkya Rahane, and Navdeep Saini have all departed for India, with the exception of Yashasvi Jaiswal,. Jaiswal has remained since he is a member of the Twenty20 team. The 5-match T20 series is scheduled to take place from August 3 to August 13, 2023.
