2 in 2 for India as New Zealand slump to spin again

After a commanding victory in the first ODI, India’s winning run didn’t stop at the Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui. The visitors once again dominated New Zealand who failed badly against spin. The Men in Blue now lead the series by 2-0 with 3 games to go. They have a great chance to win another important series away from home.

Virat Kohli won the toss and opted to bat. India has been chasing pretty well and so, the captain posted a slightly different challenge to the batsmen. The openers responded brilliantly. Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma were nearly flawless and added 154 runs for the first wicket. But both missed out on a chance to reach 3 figures.

Kohli and Ambati Rayudu then batted steadily and stitched together a partnership of 74 runs. Both of them fell in the forties. MS Dhoni and Kedar Jadhav provided the finishing touch as the former scored 48 from 33 while the latter made 22 from 10. As a result, India finished with 324/4 from 50 overs.

New Zealand was rocked back early as Bhuvneshwar Kumar sent Martin Guptill back for 15. Mohammed Shami bagged the all-important wicket of Kane Williamson for 20. That proved to be the turning point as there wasn’t a single partnership of substance from that point onward. When the spinners came into the attack, it went from bad to worse for the Kiwis.

Kuldeep Yadav once again bagged 4 wickets while Yuzvendra Chahal took 2 wickets once more. Kedar Jadhav also proved to be handy as he removed Ross Taylor. Doug Bracewell scored 57 but it proved to be too little too late. In the end, New Zealand fell short by 90 runs.
