If It Had Ended on a Winning Note I Would Have Been Even Happier, Says Shreyas Iyer

Shreyas Iyer hit his maiden ODI ton against New Zealand but still, India lost the first fixture of the series in Hamilton. Iyer once again proved his caliber and was termed by all the middle order solutions of the Indian cricket team. Post the match, Iyer said that this was just the first of many upcoming knocks for the team.

Iyer on India’s loss

Shreyas Iyer sounded happy about his performance but definitely wanted to end on the winning side. He said after the match, “I am very happy but if it had ended on a winning note I would have been even happier. But it’s the first of many, so I’ll take it in my stride and see to it that in the next matches, I finish on the winning side.”

He was asked how the team dealt with the loss. He explained that the players know it is just a loss and moving on by taking the positives. “We just sat and everybody was in their own zone. It didn’t matter to be honest. It’s just a loss and we have faced that before as well in our life. It’s not that we are facing it for the first time. So everybody is in their normal zone and it’s not something that hasn’t happened before.” He also opined, “We’ve got that confidence in our team and in ourselves that we are going to bounce back strong. We have done in the past, so we’ve just got to take the positives from this game and move forward.”

Iyer about the Kiwis

Indians scored a massive 347 but the hosts chased it down, thanks to the brilliant show by Ross Taylor and Tom Latham. Iyer agreed that the pitch was very good to bat in the second innings as well. But he did not forget to give due credit to the opposition team, “The pitch had become very good in the second innings. It was coming onto the bat and the dew factor also played an important role in this game. They batted really well, so credit has to definitely go to them for the chase.
