World Cup 2019: MS Dhoni Gets Support Even From BCCI in Gloves Controversy

Mahendra Singh Dhoni sported the ‘Balidaan’ Badge or the Army insignia on his gloves during India’s first World Cup match against South Africa. This gave birth to debate as ICC opposed to the act. But there are a number of celebrities along with fans who came out to support Dhoni on social media.

Dhoni’s Gloves Controversy

When Dhoni was stumping Phehlukwayo in the 40th over of the match against Afghanistan, Dhoni’s gloves were visible in the camera. The gloves had symbols of Indian Para Special Forces. The intention was to show respect to the Indian soldiers which eventually gave birth to controversy. According to ICC’s Clothing and Equipment Rules and Regulations, under G 1 players cannot convey such messages in international matches. Claire Furlong, ICC General Manager, Strategic Communications, told IANS, “We have requested the BCCI to get it removed.”

Dhoni Gets Supports

But Dhoni’s act attracted supports from different sectors. From sporting icons to Bollywood stars all have come out to support their icon in this issue.

Suresh Raina Tweeted in Dhoni’s Support

Suresh Raina wrote on Twitter, “While we are on the field, we devote ourselves to our country & we give all we can to make India proud. We all love our country & that’s exactly @msdhoni has done, saluting the sacrifices of our heroes & honoring them. It should be taken as an act of patriotism & not nationalism.”

Hima Das Also Tweeted

Hima Das, the first Indian to win gold at a track event of the IAAF World U20 Championships also supported Dhoni saying, “INDIA with Dhoni brother. I support Mahi brother. Jai hind Jai Bharat…”

BCCI Supports MS Dhoni in Gloves Controversy

Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju Also Tweeted in Dhoni’s Support

Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju urges BCCI to solve the matter soon. He wrote, “… the issue is connected with the sentiments of the country, the interest of the nation has to be kept in mind. I urge the BCCI to take a fair step in the Mahendra Singh Dhoni case.”

BCCI Requested ICC to Clear the Issue

BCCI reportedly have requested ICC to clear the issue as there was nothing commercial or religious about the logo. “We have already sent the request for ICC permission today morning saying that if you people feel that permission is required, we’ll seek it,” said Vinod Rai.
