“I personally feel Rohit should have been given opportunity also after scoring those five hundreds.”- Pravin Amre

Pravin Amre is happy that Ajinkya Rahane managed to live up to the faith of the team management in the first Test match against West Indies in Antigua. Though he feels sorry for Rohit Sharma, he looks happy how Rahane handled the situation.

Amre on Rahane’s knocks

Rahane scored 81 and 102 and his major contributions helped India to win the match against the Windies. Rahane got his first Test hundred in two years and earned the ‘Man of the Match’ award. His personal coach gave the entire credit to Rahane and was glad how the team believed him. He said, “I felt sorry for Rohit. I personally feel Rohit should have been given opportunity also after scoring those five hundred. We know that he is a player capable of doing great things. But overall the team management backed Ajinkya and he returned that faith, which is important from Ajinkya’s perspective.”

Speaking to PTI he opined that Rahane’s har work was paid off. The last two years were not easy for him but he was never frustrated. He cited Rahane’s involvement in County as well. He opined, “He went to England, played with the Duke ball (in county cricket). One week he was in Bengaluru (at the National Cricket Academy). So he has done what was in his hands. That was very important.”

Amre gives credits to his student

To him, that 81 at a crucial time was motivating for the entire team. “The 81 he hit in the first innings was so crucial from the team’s perspective. That inning was motivating for him. Even though he did not get a hundred, still he played crucial innings in England and South Africa. Apart from Sri Lanka, he has done very well. I was sure the hundred was around the corner.”

When asked about his contribution behind this new Rahane he completely refused to take any credits. “My contribution is not that much because ultimately a player’s hard work is important. We are there to give them moral support and keep motivating. One innings can give you back that confidence and exactly that happened.”
