I didn’t even know there was a Super Over : Ross Taylor recalls 2019 World Cup final

Ross Taylor believes that it is better to have joint-winners in the one-day World Cup than using Super Overs to announce one winner. In a recent interaction with Cricngif Taylor recalled moments from the 2019 World Cup where a Super Over decided the winner.

No need of Super Over in ODI

England and Zealand met in the 2019 World Cup final at Lord’s which eventually saw the Kiwis losing a well-fought match in a Super Over. While the ICC went on to modify the rules, Ross Taylor shared his thoughts on the same. As per the tweaked rules, Super Overs will be repeated in semi-finals and final until a winner is decided.

But Taylor said that in a one-day match a tied match can be well accepted and there is no further need of a Super over. “I’m still undecided in a Super Over in a one-day game, I think one-day cricket is played over such a long time that I have no problems in a tie being a tie.” In case of T20 Taylor has a different point of view albeit. “In T20, to continually go on is the right way to go. A bit like football or some other games, trying to get that win in, but I don’t think the Super Over is necessarily needed in a one-day game. I think you can have a joint winner.”

“A tie is a tie”

Taylor recalled the moments after the World Cup final when he went up to the umpires without realizing that there would be a Super Over. “During the World Cup I actually went up to the umpires to say ‘good game’, I didn’t even know there was a Super Over.”

Taylor opined, “A tie is a tie, I suppose you could have this argument either way, but in a one-day game I think if you can go 100 overs and still have someone equal at the end I don’t think a tie is a bad thing.”
