How will the Proteas Approach the Indian Tour After a Dismal Performance in the World Cup?

The South African team won its last ICC tournament in 1998, and it has been 21 years that it has won another tournament. The Proteas had sent one of their best teams into the 2019 World Cup in England, but the results were completely disastrous for them as they finished at number 7 in the points table, failing to make it to the knockouts. Thereafter, the Proteas are once again returning into action against India where they will be playing 3 Tests and 3 T20Is. According to the India vs South Africa Schedule, the Proteas will return again in 2020 to play an ODI series in India as well, which will conclude the South Africa tour of India 2019-20.

While the South African team is eager to get back on a winning track, this is not the only reason why the fans will be keeping a close watch on the live cricket score of the series. Another reason is that the Test series between India and South Africa is a part of the 2019-21 ICC Test Championship and the Proteas are starting their journey into the 2-year long tournament by this series. However, because the Proteas will be playing one Day Internationals the next year, their dismal performance in the World Cup does not have much effect on the squads for their Indian Tour.

The South African Team was forced to replace their three top players, Hashim Amla, John Paul Duminy and Dale Steyn who have opted for retirement. While Steyn is still available for the shorter formats, Amla and Duminy have taken a complete retirement. This made South Africa give a chance to the newer talents who have a limited cricket experience. And with the 2023 World Cup being organized in India, the Proteas aren’t willing to lose any chance to gain an experience of the cricketing conditions in India.

The Indian Tour also provides South Africa their last chance to experiment for the 2020 T20 World Cup, which is to be held in Australia. That is one of the reasons why the South African team is being led by Quinton de Kock, despite the regular skipper Faf du Plessis being available for selection. Also, the proteas have taken an initiative to groom the Young Proteas who will be leading the team in the time to come. They have 3 T20I debutants on the tour, Anrich Nortje, Temba Bavuma, and Bjorn Fortuin. Cricket South Africa wants to try with every possible combination before setting down with an established squad for the World Cup.

The Test series is for immense importance to South Africa as this will be yet another chance to win the ICC World Test Championship, which is a new tournament. And with the experienced leadership of Faf du Plessis and other senior players, the team is all set to take on India in the tournament, which currently leads the Points Table. However, even in the Test team, the Proteas have tried hands at young talents in the form of Rudi Seconds, Anrich Nortje and Senuran Muthusamy. Together with all of this setup, the Proteas are touring India to experiment with different combinations.
