Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul the front runners to captain Indian white ball side for Sri Lanka series

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are expected to miss India’s ODI series against Sri Lanka. With Gautam Gambhir replacing Rahul Dravid as India’s head coach, Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul are the frontrunners to lead the side in the upcoming series.

Kohli and Sharma’s Absence

Kohli and Sharma’s return has been delayed, and they are unlikely to feature in the ODI series against Sri Lanka. Rohit has been active in every India assignment since the South Africa Test series in December-January, while Kohli and Sharma have retired from T20I after winning the T20 World Cup.

Reasons for Missing the Series

According to a BCCI source, “Both are automatic choices in the ODI setup, and the three 50-over games against England before the Champions Trophy is good enough practice for them. They will prioritize Tests as India will play 10 of them between September to January.”

Captaincy Options

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah confirmed Rohit as India’s captain for the ICC Champions Trophy and the ongoing World Test Championship. However, for the Sri Lanka series, all-rounder Hardik Pandya and premier batter KL Rahul are considered for the captaincy. The three-match ODI series will begin in August, with Sri Lanka touring India for three T20Is and ODIs later this month.
