Glenn Maxwell Might Miss the Initial Phase of IPL 2020

Glenn Maxwell will not feature in Australia national cricket team’s upcoming tour to South Africa following an elbow injury. As confirmed by Cricket Australia on Wednesday he will be replaced by D’Arcy Short. Glenn Maxwell might miss the initial phase of IPL 2020 too.

Maxwell might miss the initial phase of IPL

Glenn Maxwell who was originally named in both the T20I and ODI squads had suffered from left elbow issue throughout the Big Bash League. Reportedly, due to increased pain over the weekend, he was taken to scans which revealed, “some loose fragments of bone within his elbow joint”.

Last year Maxwell had taken a break due to poor mental health. Now this injury break means a further delay to Maxwell’s anticipated international return. Maxwell was recalled to the Australia national cricket team earlier this month after taking a break last October. Maxwell’s absence is a blow to Australia as he was in great form in BBL. He scored 398 runs at an average of just 39.80, including three fifties for Melbourne Stars.

He will now undergo surgery and is expected to be out for six to eight weeks. This means he might miss the beginning of IPL 2020 as well. This is also a blow for Kings XI Punjab who had bought Maxwell for Rs 10.5 crore.

CA selector expects Short to utilize the chance

The national selector of Australia national cricket team Trevor Hohns said, “We are disappointed to lose Glenn this close to the tour as we were looking forward to welcoming him back to the national side in both the 20- and 50-over formats after his break during the summer.”

He further added how this is also a great opportunity for D’Arcy short. “An opportunity has now presented itself for D’Arcy and we’re confident he’ll make the most of whatever opportunities come his way in South Africa. Like Glenn, D’Arcy is an inventive, hard-hitting batsman who offers a handy spin-bowling option. We have no doubt he will make a positive contribution to the squad.”

Short who was one of the four standby players initially named for the tour of South Africa was named the replacement for Maxwell in the squad. Australia will play three T20Is starting from February 21 followed by three ODIs.
