Jason Gillespie criticised Cricket Australia for prioritising the Border-Gavaskar Trophy over Pakistan’s ODI series, leading to minimal promotion.
Jason Gillespie Criticises Cricket Australia’s Focus on BGT over Pakistan Series
Jason Gillespie, Pakistan’s interim white-ball head coach, has voiced his concerns about Cricket Australia’s (CA) priorities this summer, accusing the board of focusing excessively on the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) against India.
Following Pakistan’s historic 2-1 victory in the ODI series, Gillespie noted a lack of promotion for the series in Australia, which he attributed to CA’s prioritisation of the India series.
Gillespie, who previously represented Australia, was surprised by the minimal advertising and excitement for Pakistan’s tour, despite high-quality promotional efforts by the official broadcasters.
He expressed disappointment at the seeming indifference from CA, which left the Pakistan series under-promoted and under-acknowledged.
Lack of Promotion for Pakistan Series
Gillespie shared with the Sydney Morning Herald that he “pretty much saw no promotion” from CA for Pakistan’s ODI series.
He pointed out that while the broadcasters did their part, CA’s priority appeared to lie with the upcoming Test series against India, which seemed to overshadow the current ODI series.
“To be honest, I pretty much saw no promotion of our one-day series by Cricket Australia, which was a bit of a surprise. It’s pretty obvious that they’re prioritizing the Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test series against India because I saw no promotion of this series. Fox do a great job promoting but it was pretty clear to us where CA’s priorities lie. That’s their prerogative and their decision, but I just didn’t see any advertising or promotion of this one-day series at all,” Gillespie told the Sydney Morning Herald.
This lack of promotional activity, according to Gillespie, was “a bit of a surprise” and signalled CA’s clear preference.
CA’s decision sparked reactions from other cricket figures, including Michael Clarke, who criticised the decision to rest key players in the series decider.

Clarke commented that resting players like Pat Cummins, Steve Smith, and Mitchell Starc suggested CA’s indifference toward losing the series to Pakistan.
Reflecting on Australia’s ODI Loss
The series ended with Pakistan’s 2-1 victory, marking their first ODI series win in Australia in 22 years.
Gillespie praised Pakistan’s bowling, which he believes “exposed some flaws” in Australia’s batting. While he anticipates that the Australian side will “look to right some wrongs” before the Test series, he called the victory both convincing and satisfying.
“What we saw in this series is our bowling exposed some flaws in the Australian batting. I’m sure the Australians will look to right some wrongs and improve some things. That’s what good players and good teams do; you learn and adjust and adapt and be ready for the next challenge. It was pleasing not just to beat Australia but to beat them pretty convincingly,” he added.
The lacklustre performance from Australia’s backup players has heightened scrutiny on CA’s management decisions as they prepare for the high-profile series against India.
