Sunil Gavaskar dismissed Rohit Sharma‘s suggestion of a three-match World Test Championship (WTC) Final following India’s defeat against Australia at The Oval. Rohit had expressed his preference for a three-Test series for the WTC Final, highlighting that despite their efforts, they had only played a single match. He believed that a three-match final would be more appropriate for the next WTC cycle.
“I would like to play the 3-Test match series for the WTC Final. We worked hard and we fought, but we played just 1 game. I think a 3-match series would be ideal in the next WTC cycle,” Rohit said in the press conference.
However, Gavaskar disagreed with Rohit’s idea, indicating that a single match for the WTC Final was a fair and challenging format. He implied that it tested the teams’ abilities to perform under pressure within a limited timeframe. Gavaskar’s viewpoint suggested that the intensity and significance of a single-match final were integral to the essence of the tournament.
In response to Rohit Sharma’s suggestion of a three-match World Test Championship (WTC) Final, Sunil Gavaskar expressed his viewpoint during an interview with India Today. Gavaskar stated that teams were aware of the single final format when the WTC cycle commenced. He also raised a pertinent question regarding whether players would demand a “best of three” format in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
“No. This has been decided for a long time, you know even before you enter that first match of the cycle that the final is going to be just one-off. So, you have to be prepared mentally. Just like you prepare for the IPL, you don’t say best of three. Everybody can have a bad day, or a couple of days, but before the first ball of the cycle you know what it is. So, you can’t be asking for a best of three. Tomorrow, you may say best of five,” Gavaskar told India Today.
