Gavaskar on Kohli’s Motivation Amid Form Slump at T20 World Cup

Virat Kohli is facing a rare slump in form at the T20 World Cup, recording three consecutive single-digit scores. Despite his stellar performance in the IPL, where he won the Orange Cap for the second time, Kohli has struggled to find his rhythm in the tournament’s early stages.

Kohli, who is opening for India in T20Is for the first time since early 2021, has found the pitches in the USA challenging compared to those in the IPL. However, India has secured a spot in the Super Eights, and cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar believes that Kohli will soon regain his form.

“The biggest motivation for any player is to win matches, especially when you are playing for your country,” Gavaskar said on Star Sports. “He has done so well for India over the years and won so many games. I think he recognises that. We are in the early phases of the tournament. There’s Super 8s, semi-finals, and hopefully the final. All he needs to do is show patience and faith in himself, which I think he has plenty.”

In his three innings so far, Kohli has managed only 5 runs. He was dismissed for 1 against Ireland, followed by a mistimed shot to point against Pakistan, and most recently, a golden duck against the USA’s Saurabh Netravalkar.

Despite these setbacks, Gavaskar remains optimistic about Kohli’s prospects. “When you get three low scores, it doesn’t mean he is not batting well. Sometimes you get good deliveries. Any other day, the ball would’ve gone wide or over the slip for a boundary, today it didn’t. So, there’s nothing to worry about. We have to show faith in him. Much believe that he is going to come good, sooner rather than later,” Gavaskar added.

Kohli’s form slump has stirred discussions among fans and experts, but Gavaskar’s confidence in Kohli’s ability to bounce back provides reassurance. As the tournament moves into the Super Eights, the focus will be on Kohli to overcome this phase and contribute to India’s success.
