Gautam Gambhir Set to Become India’s Next Head Coach?

Gautam Gambhir is reportedly poised to take over as the head coach of the Indian cricket team following the end of Rahul Dravid’s tenure, which concluded with India’s triumph in the T20 World Cup 2024. Gambhir, who played a pivotal role as a mentor for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) during their victorious IPL 2024 season, recently attended a farewell shoot at Eden Gardens, sparking speculation about his impending appointment.

According to a report by Times Now, a Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) official confirmed that Gambhir was present at Eden Gardens on Friday, July 5, for a ‘farewell shoot.’ “It was a low-key affair, but Gambhir wanted to bid goodbye to his fans with a message, and that is why they shot a video at the Eden,” the official stated on condition of anonymity. The video, produced by Gambhir’s personal team, is expected to highlight his journey with KKR and his recent stint as the team’s mentor.

Gambhir’s Journey and Prospective Role

Gambhir’s mentorship was instrumental in KKR’s success in the 2024 IPL season, where the Shreyas Iyer-led side clinched the title. His coaching acumen and experience make him a strong candidate to lead the Indian cricket team. Another contender for the head coach position is WV Raman, who impressed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) with his presentation.

Official Announcement Awaited

While an official announcement from the BCCI is still pending, the farewell video and Gambhir’s recent activities suggest his appointment is imminent. BCCI secretary Jay Shah had previously confirmed that the new head coach would be in charge of Team India’s upcoming tour of Sri Lanka, which includes three ODIs and three T20Is.

Currently, the Indian team is engaged in a five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe, with VVS Laxman, head of the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru, serving as the interim head coach.
