Ganguly to discuss with selectors about Dhoni on October 24

Former captain of Indian cricket team Sourav Ganguly is the new board president-elect. Upon his return to Kolkata from Mumbai he was immediately asked about the future of MS Dhoni’s international cricket career. Ganguly said that he would talk to the selectors on October 24 about this.

BCCI president on Dhoni’s retirement

India’s T20 squad for the home series against Bangladesh will be chosen in Mumbai on October 24. On the other hand, Ganguly will officially take charge of his new role at the BCCI on October 23. So when media asked about the much talked about the issue of Indian cricket regarding MS Dhoni, Ganguly rightfully mentioned about October 24. He said, “I will find out from the selectors when I meet them on 24th. I will find out what the selectors are thinking. Then I will put my opinion.”

Ganguly also added, “I was nowhere in picture (when it transpired). So my first selection committee meeting will be on 24th.” But then even Ganguly talked on the same line and left it on Dhoni.”Let’s see what Dhoni wants,” Ganguly said.

The back story

MS Dhoni took a three-month sabbatical leave just after India’s exit from the 2019 World Cup. Then he went to serve the Indian Army in Kashmir for a couple of weeks. He was in the region during the crucial time with his unit instead of coming back to his home. He missed the West Indies tour and then he made himself unavailable for home series against South Africa. His actions led to speculations related to his retirement. Even a simple social media post of Virat Kohli went viral.

The selectors already gave a public statement as they are focusing on Rishabh Pant for all the formats. But then pant’s failure gave birth to another news that suggested the selectors are still not given up on Dhoni. India’s one of the most successful captains is probably a back-up option for the Indian cricket team at this moment. No wonder, for Ganguly this is going to be one of the foremost issues that need to get a proper direction. Fans and media now will expect some concrete news about the same.
