Former Indian fast bowler Dodda Ganesh has been appointed as the head coach of the Kenya men’s cricket team. Cricket Kenya made the announcement on Tuesday, unveiling the 51-year-old Ganesh at a ceremony held at the Sikh Union Club in Nairobi.
Ganesh, who has signed a one-year contract, expressed his excitement about the new role and outlined his primary goal: helping Kenya qualify for the ODI World Cup. “My mission is to take Kenya back to the World Cup, that’s where this country belongs,” said Ganesh. He reflected on Kenya’s previous World Cup appearances in 1996, 1999, 2003, and 2011, noting that his focus will be on returning the team to cricket’s biggest stage.
Kenya’s best performance at an ODI World Cup was in 2003 when they reached the semi-finals, eventually losing to India. Ganesh’s appointment marks a significant step for Cricket Kenya as they seek to rebuild and re-establish the team as a competitive force on the international stage.
Kenya’s journey to the World Cup begins with the ICC Division 2 Challenge League, where Ganesh’s leadership and experience will be crucial.
Ganesh, who played four Tests and one ODI for India, is excited about the challenge ahead. “It’s a privilege to be named the head coach of the Kenya cricket team,” he shared on social media, underscoring his commitment to the role and his belief in the potential of Kenyan cricket.
Kenyan cricket fans and the global cricket community will be watching closely to see how Ganesh’s tenure unfolds and whether he can achieve his ambitious goal of taking Kenya back to the World Cup.
