Former England captain Michael Vaughan advocates the elevation of star-allrounder in the batting order to counter the Anderson-Broad duo

In an intriguing development leading up to the highly anticipated Ashes series, renowned cricket expert Michael Vaughan has suggested a bold approach for the Australian team. With the Ashes scheduled to commence on Friday, June 16, the former England captain proposed a strategic shift in Australia’s batting order, aiming to counter the formidable duo of Stuart Broad and James Anderson

Vaughan’s recommendation to Australia

Vaughan’s recommendation involves the elevation of Mitchell Marsh, a versatile all-rounder, to the role of opener. “I would honestly look at someone like Mitchell Marsh to open the batting because it gets him in the team. He can bowl you a few hours. He’s done all right against England. He’s a right-hander and he might go down the aggressive route.”, Vaughan said during a recent interview.

Vaughan, renowned for his tactical acumen, emphasized that selecting Marsh as an opener would not only grant him a spot in the playing XI but also inject aggression into Australia’s batting approach. Despite predominantly featuring in the middle order for his country, the right-handed Marsh has showcased his ability to disrupt bowlers while opening on previous occasions. Vaughan, speaking to The Age, expressed his confidence in Marsh’s capability to apply pressure on the English attack through an attacking brand of cricket.

Vaughan lauds Anderson

Why not try something a bit different?” Vaughan questioned, highlighting the struggles faced by other Australian openers in the recent few series. By introducing Marsh as an unconventional option at the top, he believes Australia can disrupt the rhythm of Broad and Anderson, both adept at exploiting left-handed batsmen. The 41-year-old Anderson, who continues to excel in international cricket, has particularly impressed Vaughan with his impeccable bowling skills.

“Anderson is bowling better than ever. It’s a cliché that everyone uses, but he truly seems to defy age with his consistent performances. His mastery over swing and ability to trouble left-handers make him a potent threat,” Vaughan lauded. Considering Anderson’s remarkable form, Vaughan urged Australia to meticulously analyze their top-order batsmen and reconsider the idea of fielding two left-handed openers against the relentless English seam attack.

The upcoming Ashes series, a celebrated rivalry between England and Australia, promises thrilling encounters, with the first Test scheduled at the historic Edgbaston in Birmingham. Subsequent matches will be hosted at renowned cricket venues, including Lord’s, Headingley, Manchester, and Kennington Oval.
