Darren Lehmann, the former head coach of Australia, has made headlines with his recent resignation from his roles as assistant coach for both Brisbane Heat and Queensland men’s cricket teams. This unexpected move comes as Lehmann, 54, shifts his focus to a full-time commentary position with ABC Sport for the upcoming summer of cricket in Australia.
A Sudden Departure from Coaching
Lehmann’s decision to step down comes just as the 2024-25 season approaches. He had a year remaining on his contract and was expected to continue under new head coach Johan Botha, following the departure of Wade Seccombe earlier this year. Lehmann played a pivotal role in the Heat’s success, having been part of the coaching staff that led them to their first Big Bash League (BBL) title in 2012-13 and again last season.
Reflecting on his time with Queensland Cricket, Lehmann expressed gratitude for the experiences he gained: “I’ve had a great time over the journey, with so many fond memories from that time. I wish nothing but the best for the future for all at QC and the Heat and thank each and every member of staff and the playing group for making my time at QC so enjoyable and fulfilling.”
Transition to Commentary
Lehmann’s new role with ABC Sport will see him provide commentary during various cricket events, including the highly anticipated Border-Gavaskar series and BBL matches. His extensive experience as a player and coach will undoubtedly bring valuable insights to listeners during live broadcasts.
This shift may signal a potential end to Lehmann’s coaching career, especially after he applied for head coaching positions with both Adelaide Strikers and Melbourne Renegades but was unsuccessful. The move to commentary allows him to remain closely connected to the sport while exploring new avenues.
A Legacy of Influence
Queensland Cricket CEO Terry Svenson praised Lehmann’s contributions over the years. “Throughout his long involvement with us, whether as a team coach with the Bulls and the Heat or assisting individual players with their development, Darren has been a positive and proactive influence on cricket in the state,” Svenson said.
Lehmann’s legacy includes not just titles but also the development of young talent in Queensland cricket. His departure marks a significant change as Andy Bichel remains the only member of the coaching panel at both Queensland and Heat, ushering in a new era under Botha and general manager of high performance Joe Dawes.
