England named 12-member squad for the third Ashes Test

The hosts are 0-1 down in the ongoing Ashes against Australia. But the selectors want to keep faith on the 12-member squad from the Lord’s Test that had a thrilling end.

The Squad Analysis

The third Test of Ashes is scheduled to begin from August 22 at Headingley. England has announced their squad for the same. The squad is unchanged from the last Test at Lord’s and James Anderson is still out of the team. He is, albeit making progress with his calf injury and will play for Lancashire second XI in a three-day match with Leicestershire second XI this week. That will be Anderson’s match fitness test before the third Test match of Ashes. If he becomes fit by the end of Headingley Test, he might get featured in the fourth match at Old Trafford, Manchester.

Jofra Archer, after his prolific performance, has retained his place in the team. The debutant stunned everyone by his hostile spells and deadly speed. Jason Roy and Joe Denly even after their failures will be seen playing in the next Test. Rory Burns, on the other hand, was decent in the second Test after his prolific century in the first match. Whereas wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow seemed to find some form at Lord’s, Ben Stokes once again was England’s Mr. Dependable at the hour of need. Off-spinner Jack Leach recalled in place of Moeen Ali for Lord’s, also bowled with control, especially on the dramatic final day. It has helped him keep his place in the team.

There was no doubt over the selection of Stuart Broad, Chris Woakes, or Sam Curran. All were decent enough and up to the mark. Broad, especially was brilliant with his line and control.

The unchanged squad

Joe Root (c), Jos Buttler (wk), Jonny Bairstow (wk), Jason Roy, Rory Burns, Joe Denly, Ben Stokes, Chris Woakes, Jofra Archer, Stuart Broad, Jack Leach, Sam Curran.
