Former India opener Virender Sehwag opined that India’s situation in World Cup could have been a whole lot different had the Indian team management decided to change the batting order of former captain MS Dhoni in the ICC World Cup 2019 semi-final against New Zealand.

The back story

India were thrown out of the World Cup semi-final after they failed to chase down New Zealand’s 240-run target at Manchester. The exit was shocking for all as India were one of the strong contenders of the tournament. The match went to the reserve day after a rained out main day and India were struggling on 24/4. What surprised many that there was no sign of MS Dhoni, even after being the most senior member of the team. Dhoni’s ability to steady the innings with his calm presence in the middle is known to all and could have saved the match for India according to the experts. Dhoni was sent in to bat at No. 7 but by then there was nothing really left for India.

India were 90 for 6 at 30.3 overs when Dhoni and Jadeja started to recover and rebuild the innings. The duo scored 116-runs together for the seventh wicket and gave last hope to the country. But after scoring a brilliant 77 off 59 balls Ravindra Jadeja fell to Trent Boult. Dhoni was soon to follow after being run out for 50 runs. India eventually lost the match by 18 runs.

Viru says

Virender Sehwag believes India’s batting order rotation should have been a bit different on that day. Speaking about the same he said “If MS Dhoni had come up to bat against New Zealand, the situation could have been different. Dhoni should have batted when India needed to build the innings,” Sehwag said.

He also believes that Hardik Pandya would have been a better choice for No. 7 and along with Rishabh Pant could chase down the high required run rate at the end. “Hardik could have batted down the order when 9+ runs were needed. Hardik and Pant could have chased down the high required rate if they came down the order,” Sehwag added.
