David Warner tells how they tackled the Siraj threat

On Saturday, May 6, in Match 50 of the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL), the Delhi Capitals (DC) pounded the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by seven wickets at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.

After Faf du Plessis won the toss and decided to bat, Bangalore scored a respectable 181/4 in their 20 overs, with half-centuries from Virat Kohli and Mahipal Lomror. They suffered their fifth loss in the competition, though, as a result of Phil Salt’s brutal knock during the chase.

Given that there are currently four teams ahead of RCB in the playoff race, RCB will be aware that they need to get their act together. They need to carefully evaluate their performances because they are in the middle of a long road journey.

As Delhi completed the challenging 182 chase in 16.4 overs, the opener struck 87(45). He and his captain David Warner gave Delhi a blistering start, adding 60 runs in 5.1 overs before Warner was dismissed for 22 (14). Then Mitchell Marsh joined the action and continued to up the ante. After being expelled for violation of clause 26(17), Rilee Rossouw left. The batter hit 35 without being stopped in 22 balls. Earlier, after electing to bat, Virat Kohli and Mahipal Lomror each scored magnificent fifties that helped RCB reach 181/4 in 20 overs. Lomror scored 54 unbroken points off 29 balls to return, and Kohli added 55 (46).

The major part of the chase was the way the openers tackled Mohammad Siraj. They were brutal against the in form bowler smashing him all over the park. David Warner spoke during the post match presentation about how they rattled Siraj.

He said that they had decided to attack Siraj. Siraj has got his wickets when he has bowled full. Hence they decided that they would make him drag his length back and deny him wickets.

“Our intention was to take on Siraj, he’s been bowling well and taking wickets early. His wickets have been bowled or LBW so we wanted to drag his length back,” Warner said.

This tactics really proved to be the difference in the end as DC made a mockery of the RCB total.
