Cricket Australia’s new CEO, Todd Greenberg, has urged the global cricketing community to solve the long-standing issue of bad light. Speaking during the ICC meetings in Harare, Greenberg called for innovation and fan-first thinking to tackle stoppages due to poor lighting.

Greenberg recently succeeded Nick Hockley, who stepped down last month. Taking over the reins, Greenberg wasted no time in addressing one of cricket’s most frustrating problems.

‘We need to stop walking off’ – Greenberg calls for change

Greenberg believes cricket must embrace its identity as part of the entertainment industry. Therefore, he said, the game must focus on fan experience. In his view, stopping play due to bad light is outdated and sends the wrong message.

“We’re in the entertainment business,” Greenberg told The Daily Telegraph. “That means we must ensure fans enjoy the game as much as possible. It’s frustrating when players walk off due to bad light. Cricket might be one of the last industries still doing that.”

He emphasized that such interruptions harm the sport’s image. He urged stakeholders to work together and find ways to keep play going even in poor lighting conditions.

Technology and teamwork key to solving the issue

While Greenberg admitted the issue isn’t simple, he stressed the importance of moving forward. He acknowledged why play stops under bad light but insisted there are tools available to reduce its impact.

“We want fans to have the best experience,” he said. “And nothing’s more frustrating than watching a game stop because of bad light. Especially when we now have lights in stadiums and modern technology.”

He pointed out the potential of using different colored balls or advanced equipment to keep the game going. However, he also acknowledged that changes won’t happen overnight.

“The players are crucial to this solution. We need to communicate openly with them. I’m a realist. I know this won’t be fixed tomorrow. But it’s 2025. We can play under lights. Surely we can solve this,” Greenberg added.

A growing push for innovation

Greenberg’s statement reflects a wider push within cricket circles to modernize the sport. Fans have long complained about stoppages due to bad light, especially in crucial Test matches. With leaders like Greenberg speaking out, there’s renewed hope that the issue may finally see resolution.

In the meantime, players, boards, and fans alike will watch closely. Will this be the start of a more adaptable and fan-friendly era for cricket?
