Beth Mooney and Gujarat Giants
Beth Mooney will take on field as the Gujarat Giants captain in the inaugural season of the Women’s Premier League on March 4. Mooney, in her illustrated career did not lead a side at the top level except for her captaincy stint with Brisbane Heat in the Women’s Big Bash League and Queensland Fire in the Women’s NCL, will bring immense experience to the side.
Beth Mooney won Women’s Big Bash League thrice and scored multiple T20 centuries along with 18 half-centuries. When she was part of Brisbane Heat, she took the side to two consecutive WBBL titles in 2018 and 2019. Later she did the same for Perth Scorchers. She is also coming off a successful T20I World Cup campaign with Australia. She has been part of a number of ODI and T20I World Cup winning Australian squads, she was also the Gold Medal winning in the Commonwealth Games last years. Mooney is a big-match player, and she knows how to take the team to the finishing line. She will be bringing the gutsy mindset with her that makes Australia’s women’s cricket team invincible.
Moreover, Mooney will be working with her former teammate Rachael Haynes, who is serving the Gujarat Giants as their team coach. Speaking of the same, Money said, “I know Rachael Haynes quite well [and it is good] to be able to work pretty close with her.” While asked about her job as th captain, the keeper-batter said, “I haven’t done a lot of captaincy recently but I did a fair bit when I was younger. I have got a little bit of experience. I trust Rach and her judgement and so I was more than happy to help her out.”
The freedom of bringing all her experience to build a new side will give her the opportunity to make it big. Australians like to win matches, no matter what. Winning big tournaments is Mooney’s forte, thanks to her Australian gene. Mooney knows how to handle such hyped tournament. The WPL teams are in their initial stages now. The players need strong personalities to look up to and keep faith in. Mooney is exactly the kind of character the teams need at present to have a spirited start. While it is not always about winning the tournament to some, for Mooney winning is everything.
