Bangladesh cricketers go on strike

Bangladesh cricketers have gone on strike following their unfulfilled demands. This immediately puts their India tour next month under threat.

On Monday, Shakib Al Hasan, the Test and T20 captain of Bangladesh cricket team has informed that Bangladesh will no longer participate until the board fulfils their demands. Bangladesh’s cricketers have decided not to get involved in any future cricket activities until their demands for the improvement of cricket in the country are fulfilled.

The players have a list of 11 demands which also includes a reversal of the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s decision to abandon the Bangladesh Premier League’s franchise-based model. Cricketers like Shakib Al Hasan, Tamim Iqbal, Mushfiqur Rahim, and Mahmudullah have talked to the media at a press conference at the National Cricket Academy in Dhaka about their decision. The national cricketers who play in the first division circuit were already a part of the strike. Now according to the final decision, no age-level cricketers, seeking the demand are part of the protest too.

The decision of scrapping BPL means a huge reduction in the average earning of a professional cricketer. The players have also demanded that local cricketers should be paid as much as foreign players. Moreover, the BCB did not raise the match-fees in the first-class competition started earlier this month. The salary cap applied to the Dhaka Premier League which used to be an open market for club-to-club transfer for players, for the last several years added to the grievances of the cricketers.

The players were currently in the training camp for the next month’s tour of India. Bangladesh is set to travel India for a three-match T20I series starting from November 3. Now if the country’s cricket board does not come to a mutual agreement with the players, the tour might get cancelled as well.
