Cricket Australia has unveiled its 13-member squad for the upcoming Boxing Day Test against Pakistan, set to kick off on December 26 at the historic Melbourne Cricket Ground. Led by Pat Cummins, the squad notably excludes backup fast bowler Lance Morris, who has been released to participate in the ongoing Big Bash League (BBL) representing Melbourne Stars. This decision indicates Australia’s intent to maintain the same playing XI that secured a dominant 360-run victory over Pakistan in the first Test at the Optus Stadium in Perth.
George Bailey, Cricket Australia’s chief selector, clarified that Morris remains a crucial part of their summer plans and has been temporarily released to feature in the BBL. Bailey emphasized that Morris could be recalled should the need arise during the Test series against Pakistan.
Following their comprehensive win in Perth, Australia’s squad remains largely unchanged, reflecting the team’s confidence in their recent performance. The first Test witnessed significant individual achievements, including David Warner‘s 26th Test century and Nathan Lyon‘s milestone of reaching 500 wickets in Test cricket.
Warner’s century holds particular significance as he has announced that the upcoming Sydney Test will mark his retirement from the game. However, his decision has sparked controversy, with former Australian cricketer Mitchell Johnson criticizing Warner’s inclusion in the farewell series, citing his lack of significant contributions in recent years apart from the current summer’s double century. Johnson’s comments have added intrigue to Warner’s impending retirement, raising questions about the timing and appropriateness of his farewell series.
Australia’s squad for the Boxing Day Test includes a blend of seasoned players and promising talents, featuring David Warner, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith, Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh, Alex Carey, Pat Cummins (c), Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood, Scott Boland, and Cameron Green.
As anticipation builds for the Boxing Day Test, all eyes will be on the Australian squad as they aim to maintain their winning momentum against a resilient Pakistani side.
