Ashwin joins Kumble and Harbhajan, levels Muralitharan

Ravichandran Ashwin became only the third Indian bowler to reach the landmark of 250 Test wickets at home. Ashwin dismissed Mominul Haque for 37 in the first Test match against Bangladesh in Indore and joined the elite list beating the likes of Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh.

Records by R Ashwin

Anil Kumble leads the list with 350 Test wickets in India with Harbhajan Singh scalping 265 wickets at home. Now the star off-spinner of Virat Kohli’s team R Ashwin enters the same list as the third member. With this record, Ashwin also levels Muttiah Muralitharan. Ashwin claimed 250th scalp in his 42nd match at home and thus became the joint-fastest bowler along Sri Lankan legend Muttiah Muralitharan. This list has Anil Kumble at the second place who bagged the magic number of wickets in his 43rd match. Harbhajan Singh took 51 matches to register the record and hence is standing at the fifth place. The third and fourth places are occupied by Rangana Herath (44) and Daye Steyn (59).

Overall, Ashwin is now the fourth leading wicket-taker in India with 358 scalps to his name. Anil Kumble tops the chart with 619 wickets followed by Kapil Dev (434), Harbhajan Singh (417), and Zaheer Khan (311) in the second, third, and fifth spot respectively.

A forgetful day for Bangladesh

Earlier in the Indore Test match, Bangladesh skipper Mominul Haque won the toss on his captaincy debut only to be haunted by the hosts later. The Indian bowlers made the outing pretty difficult for the Bangladesh batsmen. They were brilliant in the first two sessions and at tea, the visitors were then restricted to 150. Mohammed Shami took three wickets whereas Umesh Yadav, Ishant Sharma and R. Ashwin picked 2 wickets each. This is Bangladesh’s maiden Test under the World Test Championship whereas their opponents India are already leading the charts with 240 points from five games.
