Arjit Singh touches MS Dhoni’s feet during the Opening Ceremony of TATA IPL 2023

With the return of famed actor Mandira Bedi, the IPL 2023 Opening Ceremony got off to a spectacular start. The well-known actor from the 1990s dabbled in cricket broadcasting but left it after a few years. Yet what a way to return: in front of a raucous audience in the biggest stadiums in the globe. While all was going on, Arijit Singh charmed the crowd with songs like Kesariya, Channa Mereya, and the current single, Tujhe Kitna Chaahne Lagey Hum.

Following Arijit’s performance, Tamanna Bhatia dazzled the audience with some incredible dancing manoeuvres. Rashmika Madanna was the penultimate performance as the crowd went wild after Tamanna. MS Dhoni, Hardik Pandya, Jay Shah, and Arun Dhumal were all invited to the stage following their performances. Pandya carried the captains’ trophies as they entered in chariot-like vehicles. They had a picture taken with the trophy as the event came to a close.

The season opener between the defending champion Gujarat Titans and Chennai Super Kings will take place in the same location after the major event. The IPL’s opening ceremony today is also the league’s first since last year.

Gujarat Titans’ chase has gotten off to a fast start. Impact players Sai Sudharshan and Shubman Gill continued their run rate after Wriddhiman Saha failed for 25 off 16 runs. But, Gill left as the scene appeared to be ready.

As wickets fell at the other end of the field earlier, Ruturaj Gaikwad carried the CSK innings and guided them to a score of 178/7 in 20 overs. In just 23 balls, he sped to fifty, and in the first 10 overs, he hit six sixes. After the 12th over, CSK’s momentum started to wane, and despite Gaikwad’s best efforts to turn things around, he ultimately lost his wicket for 82 off 50. Then, in the final over, captain MS Dhoni struck a six and a four to get CSK very near to 180.

CSK: Devon Conway, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Moeen Ali, Ben Stokes, Ambati Rayudu, Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja, MS Dhoni(w/c), Mitchell Santner, Deepak Chahar, Rajvardhan Hangargekar
