Two-time U.S. Olympic gymnast Jordan Chiles is involved in a controversy over returning her bronze medal from the 2024 Paris Olympics. The arbitration panel has decided not to reconsider the decision and says she can keep the medal.
The Bronze Medal Dispute
Jordan Chiles’ bronze medal was challenged because of a dispute over the timing of a score inquiry.
The USA Gymnastics team questioned the difficult score Chiles received, but their challenge was submitted four seconds past the allowed one-minute window after the score was announced.
The Romanian Gymnastics Federation and other gymnasts argued that this late challenge should not alter the rankings.
Ultimately, the Court of Arbitration for Sport upheld the challenge from Romania, resulting in Chiles losing her bronze medal and it being awarded to Romanian gymnast Ana BÇŽrbosu.
But later on Monday 12 August, the arbitration panel refused to change the decision and allowed Jordan Chiles to have the medal.
American Olympic Medals: Gained or Revoked
Since the early 1900s, Team USA has seen several Olympic medals either gained or revoked due to issues like doping or rule violations. Here are some notable cases:
1. Jim Thorpe (1912): Thorpe initially won gold in the pentathlon and decathlon but had his medals taken away for violating amateur rules. They were reinstated posthumously in 1982.
2. Calvin Smith (1988): Smith finished fourth in the 100 metres, but Canadian Ben Johnson, who won gold, was disqualified for doping, moving Smith up to third place.
3. Marion Jones (2000): Jones won five medals but had them stripped in 2007 after admitting to steroid use. This affected the standings of seven other athletes.
4. Lance Armstrong (2000): Armstrong lost his bronze medal in the men’s time trial after admitting to doping in 2013. His medal was not reallocated.
5. Adam Nelson (2004): Nelson, initially a silver medalist in shot put, was later awarded gold after Ukraine’s Yuriy Bilonog was disqualified for doping.
6. Jason Turner (2008): Turner moved from fourth to bronze in the 10-metre air pistol after North Korea’s Kim Jong-su was disqualified for doping.
7. Tyson Gay (2012): Gay’s team lost their silver medal in the 4×100 metre relay after he was suspended for a doping violation. The medals were reallocated to other countries.
These changes reflect ongoing efforts to maintain fairness and integrity in Olympic competition.
