Anil Kumble supports Virat Kohli

The rift between former India coach Anil Kumble and current captain Virat Kohli is infamous for various reasons. But Kumble seems to be supportive of Kohli’s idea of having limited Test match venues.

Kumble reiterates Kohli

India captain Virat Kohli recently suggested the idea of having only five-Test centres at maximum for any series in home conditions. Kohli’s point came after the India-South Africa Test series as not all stadiums were packed to capacity. So the India captain wants the Tests to be played at limited venues like other countries to capture more audience. A day before the start of the 3rd Test between India and South Africa in Ranchi, only 3000 tickets had been sold till the eve of the game.

Anil Kumble retired from his post of head coach of Indian team following a not so great equation with the skipper. But this time the legendary leg spinner echoed Kohli’s thought. He said to CricketNext, “I think that has certainly been one of the ways of promoting Test cricket. It is also important to choose the time of the Test match. We all remember that during the festival of Pongal, a Test match used to happen in Chennai. And the start of the season used to be in Delhi. Bangalore would have a Test match, Mumbai would have a Test match, Kolkata of course.”

Spectators need better facilities

He further added that these centres must be promoted for the sake of the longer format of the game. He opined, “I think it is important for Test cricket to promote these centres where people would know that these are the centres where you are going to play Test match cricket prior to the start of the season, so that you can market Test cricket and you can make sure that the crowds come in.”

He also talked about the facilities of the stadiums. According to him, it is important to cater better service to the spectators to come and view the game. “You know, they need to have comfortable seats, the access to the stadium, ticketing I think use of technology is something that we need to look at when it comes to issuing tickets and then of course the basic comfort like food and water and toilet facilities.”

Kumble believes if the stadiums can provide all these, people will turn up for the love of Test cricket.
